When Richard Sherman chose to sound off at the ESPY's about guaranteed contract money in the NFL as compared to the NBA and other sports, he was under the impression that people would hear him, want to strike for better pay, and actually miss NFL games in the process. He wanted to get the ball rolling on the change in NFL contract structure by threatening to skip games, and making people aware that they too will have to miss out on huge paydays.
