No play in sports history may be more synonymous with a brain lapse more than Chris Webber’s timeout in the 1993 Championship game vs. North Carolina, but JR Smith has entered his name into the conversation of most infamous plays in sports history as his costly error at the end of Game 1 may have cost the Cavaliers their season.
Webber, of course, ran down the floor in the final seconds of the 1993 National Championship Game against North Carolina and called timeout after being trapped in the corner by Tarheels defenders, only to find out the Wolverines didn’t have any timeouts left. This resulted, by rule, in technical free throws for the Heels and UNC being awarded the ball and a national championship in the process. To this day, the timeless replay is often at the top of countdowns featuring the biggest mistakes in sports history, and Webber himself has very rarely if ever, talked about the game publicly over two decades later.
But was Webber’s mistake as dim-witted as Smith’s? Who after getting an offensive rebound off a missed George Hill free throw with less than five seconds to go in a tie game, didn’t take the ensuing putback shot, and instead dribbled the clock out under the assumption the Cavaliers were winning.
