Kim Kardashian faced backlash over the summer after she posted a series of Instagram Stories where her sisters, Khloe Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, complimented her thin appearance. Complimenting your sisters is totally fine, however, Kim, Khloe, and Kendall used the eating disorder anorexia to describe Kim's appearance in a positive way and that's just not OK.
In the videos, Kendall says "I'm really concerned, I don't think you're eating," with a laugh. Khloe goes on to say "she’s anorexic here [gestures to waist], her arms are like pin thin, they’re like my pinky." Kim accepts these comments as extremely complimentary, replying "Oh my god, thank you."
Many people, of course, found this behavior problematic, especially considering the huge platform the Kardashian-Jenner family has. Their fanbase mostly consists of young girls, as well, so using an eating disorder as a compliment is dangerous. Now, months later, Kim is finally addressing her comments. In a discussion with Ashley Graham, Kim apologized, saying she realizes she made a mistake.
I 100 percent completely understand where people would be coming from that felt that way. My intention is never to offend anyone and I really apologize if I offended anyone.... I know people that have serious eating disorders that have been in and out of the hospital for 15 years, close people. So, I’ve been through, I’ve experienced it enough to have known better... It was insensitive.
Kim then clarified that while she did lose weight, she did it in a healthy manner. The reality star says she works out regularly with a trainer, as well as makes sure to eat healthy foods.
It's great that Kim is owning her mistake, however, this isn't the first time she's come under fire for promoting unhealthy eating habits. She shared an ad for appetite suppressant lollipops on Instagram last May and faced similar backlash. She deleted the ad eventually, but she posted the controversial Instagram Stories about her weight just two months later.
Hopefully, Kim meant what she said in her conversation with Ashley Graham and will refrain from promoting unhealthy eating habits online.
