Colin Cowherd Says Marcus Mariota is Not a Franchise Quarterback

Washington Redskins v Tennessee Titans
Colin Cowherd: “I’ve never been a huge fan of Marcus Mariota and now he may lose his starting job to Ryan Tannehill. Here is my knock on my Mariota: quarterback is probably the most verbal position in American sports. I did a fifteen minute interview with him once and we only got about four and a half minutes. he’s so quiet and non-verbal. He doesn’t communicate great, he’s too reliant on running in the red zone, he appears to be a little brittle, I don’t think he sees the field particularly well, and in his fifth year I don’t feel like it’s HIS team, and it should be. Last year he had 13 touchdowns and 8 interceptions and was a lesser version of Andy Dalton. He’s a great kid but he sort of slight. I don’t think he has an ‘own the room’ personality, I don’t think he’s a great communicator, he’s non-verbal at a verbal position, and he’s struggling to stave of RYAN TANNEHILL this camp.” (FULL AUDIO AT BOTTOM OF PAGE)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he doesn’t believe Tennessee Titans four-year starter Marcus Mariota is a legitimate franchise quarterback in the NFL, as the former no. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft nears free agency a year from now.

Mariota has had an up and down career, as he’s recorded three consecutive winning seasons as the Titans starter, including a heroic performance during their 2017 AFC wild card playoff win in Arrowhead Stadium against the Chiefs, but a quarterback who’s been one of the least productive in the NFL in terms of statistics, throwing for just 24 touchdowns (23 interceptions) the last two seasons and averaging under 200 yards passing per game in that same span.

Check out the audio below as Colin says the ongoing quarterback controversy in Tennessee makes him double down on his critiques of Mariota not being durable and communicative enough to be the franchise quarterback of an NFL team.
