After Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was forced out of their first-round playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks with a concussion, 40-year-old journeyman quarterback Josh McCown was the only other quarterback left on the depth chart.
McCown, who signed with the Eagles during the preseason on the condition that he could coach football at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, where his sons Owen and Aiden play, put on his helmet and tried to lead the 8-8 Eagles to a home playoff victory.
McCown seemed off during the game and had a noticeable limp, which got worse as the game wore on. According to a report from ESPN's Tim McManus, McCown suffered a torn hamstring in the second quarter, but with nobody else left to line up behind center, gutted out the rest of the game.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that it wasn't just a small tear, he ripped his hamstring off the bone. He is scheduled to have surgery next week and will be laid up for about six weeks. His total recovery time could take at least six months.
He finished the game completing 18 out of 24 passes for 174 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He was also sacked six times and had an impressive 11-yard run that set up an Eagles field goal in their eventual 17-9 loss.
After the game, McCown did not reveal that he was injured but reflected on his career.
"This year has been nothing short of special for me. I've really enjoyed it and have learned so much from so many people. I'm thankful to be a part of it. As far as the future goes, we'll see. I haven't made any decisions yet. I'll get with my family and talk with them. I retired once, so I know how to do that. We'll just see. I don't know yet."
