This is a dream come true for '90s kids.
General Mills made a big announcement on Monday (February 3). Dunkaroos is coming back in summer 2020. The official Dunkaroos Twitter account shared the big news with a series of nostalgia-inducing tweets. Announcing the comeback of Dunkaroos just wouldn't feel right without at least one Tamagotchi reference.
"The year is 1997. Your Tamagotchi is thriving. You just set a new personal best with your Bop It. Your mom packed Dunkaroos in your lunch. Everyone at school wants to be your friend. Life is good," the announcement read. "The year is 2020. You just found out Dunkaroos are coming back. Life is good."
General Mills expanded on their decision to bring back the most popular Dunkaroos flavor - Vanilla Cookies and Vanilla Frosting with Rainbow Sprinkles, obviously - in a blog post."For those who grew up in the '90s, the original cookie-frosting combo represents the taste, color and fun of being a kid during that decade," Jeff Caswell, president of snacks at General Mills, wrote. "We know there's a lot of love for Dunkaroos, and fans everywhere have been asking for it. We're excited to help '90s kids relive all the best parts of childhood."
Though nothing was confirmed until February, General Mills sparked comeback rumors when they quietly launched Instagram and Twitter accounts for Dunkaroos back in January. "This better be real," one Instagram user commented on the account's first post. "I’ve been having to compensate with teddy grahams and cake icing."
Dunkaroos were discontinued in the United States back in 2012, however, the snack pack was still available in other countries. Fans took to ordering them online from countries where they were still available. This practice became so common place that General Mills actually launched a website called Smugglaroos, which encouraged Canadians traveling to the United States to bring Dunkaroos with them and shared them with Americans who don't have access to them. The site, however, has been shuttered.
Few other details are known about the Dunkaroos relaunch in summer 2020. A spokesperson confirmed they will be available at 7-Eleven stores nationwide before rolling out to other stores. No official release date has been confirmed yet, either. We'll just have to keep our eyes on Dunkaroos' official social media accounts for more information. One thing we do know, though, is that the countdown to summer is on.
