St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester was carted off the ice after collapsing on the bench during the first period of Tuesday (February 11) night's game against the Anaheim Ducks. The 36-year-old had just finished up a long shift and was on the bench during a break in play when he slumped over while reaching for a water bottle.
His teammates immediately called for help, and medical personnel rushed to the bench. They loaded him onto a stretcher, and he was taken the hospital for treatment and observation.
Officials said that the 17-year veteran suffered a cardiac episode and was alert and able to move his arms and legs as he was transported from the arena
"Thankfully, with the quick response of our medical trainers, Anaheim medical trainers, and their team physicians, they were able to stabilize Jay," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said.
After Bouwmeester was taken to the hospital, players from both teams went back to their locker rooms, and the game was postponed, tied 1-1. The game will be made up of a later date.
Bouwmeester's father was at the game as part of the team's annual Dads Trip.
Bouwmeester remained in the hospital overnight. The team was scheduled to fly to Las Vegas for their next game against the Golden Knights but stayed in Anaheim while they waited for an update on his condition.
