Rob Gronkowski shocked the football world when he announced that he was unretiring and would be reuniting with his former teammate, Tom Brady, in Tampa Bay after the Patriots traded away the star tight end for a fourth-round draft pick.
The move stunned everybody because it appeared that Gronk had moved on from the NFL after winning the WWE 24/7 championship. After he retired in 2018, there was speculation that he might return late in the 2019 season and help the Patriots make a push to another Super Bowl. Gronkowski always left the door open to returning but continued to deny any rumors he was coming back right up until the moment his comeback was announced.
It turns out that Gronk's comeback may have been in the making ever since Brady began looking for contract offers. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport,Brady told teams he wanted to bring back one of his favorite targets.
Rapoport said that he had been hearing rumors about Gronk coming back for a while, but that the Patriots and the Buccaneers kept the trade under wraps until after it was more or less finalized.
