Dan Patrick Show: “What was the endgame of this boycott?”
Chris B. Haynes: “I’m not trying to take anything away from the players’ narrative, but we talk about a ‘boycott.’ Let’s start with this, the Bucks had just intended to forfeit. The latest shooting that happened in their backyard – this was personal for them. They just intended to forfeit and there wasn’t this whole boycott or organized thing from the players. Everyone was caught off guard if you weren’t a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. Once the Bucks did this, it made it kind of impossible for the rest of the teams to play the game… That was the problem for Lebron and many others. The Bucks did this, but now everyone was this in situation where they’re sitting out, and now what’s the end game? What are we asking for? What are we demanding? That was LeBron’s frustration and part of the reason he walked out on the meeting as well. It was like ‘we’re doing this because you forced us to sit.’ This wasn’t organized by everyone. Udonis Haslem questioned George Hill, because George Hill of the Bucks was the one who orchestrated this to sit this game out. He was like ‘Who are we as veterans to tell everybody that is in our best interests to leave Orlando? All the youngsters in this league are not financially secure to go through with a drastic move to leave money on the table, and this is very selfish of us to make everyone go out and do this’… When you talk about players ‘boycotting’, we need to kind of change that narrative. A ‘boycott’ is an organized position. They were forced into this. I have a problem calling it a ‘boycott’. This was something they were forced into, and now that they’re in this position they felt like they had to ‘ask’ for something and had to ‘demand’ something. “ (Full Segment Above)

Haynes said that LeBron James and many veteran players were completely caught off guard by the Bucks effectively trying to ‘forfeit’ their game versus Orlando in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting in Wisconsin, Haynes that there was never a plan to boycott the season, and that anything cancellations after the Milwaukee game were simply ‘forced’, as the players didn’t know what to do next.
