Clay Travis: Sports Leagues Keep Ignoring Developments in Jacob Blake Case

Clay Travis: “There were a lot of different leagues out there that made the decision that they were not going to play in the wake of the Jacob Blake incident in Kenosha, Wisconsin. What’s wild is all of these leagues and all of these athletes made the decision to shut down without knowing what the actual facts of the case were. Most people in sports media are never going to come back to you and talk to you about this because they’re going to be so afraid to talk about it as if there are certain facts that if they become uncomfortable you just don’t address. Obviously that’s not what we do at Outkick and I try to be as honest with you as I can every single day… When videos are being cut and they’re being distributed you have to be very careful to not believe that they are 100% accurate, or that they’re completely representative of everything that went on… With the Jacob Blake story, what actually happened was the woman called 9-1-1 because she had accused Jacob Blake of felony sexual assault. He showed up at her house, and she was seeking police help. The police arrived, and they attempted to take Jacob Blake into custody because he has an outstanding felony warrant against him. He refuses to be taken into custody and does not succumb to a tazer. He then puts a police officer in a headlock. He refuses to listen to police officers’ instruction. He then walks around the car, opens the door, and reaches in to grab a knife, at which point he is shot. All you probably saw on social media was the shooting. I’m not necessarily commenting on whether there might have been excessive force used, that's a determination a DA can make, what I am pointing out is almost none of the leagues or athletes waited for facts. They all reacted to a 15 or 20-second video which didn’t in any way provide a full illustration to what had actually happened. Everybody rushes out, there’s protests, there’s riots, people additionally die in the city of Kenosha all as a result of a partial video. The WNBA women on a basketball team walk out and spell Jacob Blake’s name on t-shirt with each of them having a letter. The majority of those players are black women, and directly spitting in the face of the woman who accused Jacob Blake of sexual assault. It’s mind-blowing how quickly people react and how quickly mob rule takes over on social media. Instead of making things better, athletes are making things worse. Instead of making the country a safer and better place for people of all races, I think they’re making it more dangerous for everybody, and they are spending more time dividing than they are uniting.” (Full Segment Above)

Listen to Clay Travis discuss the sports world’s reaction to the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as a viral video of Blake being gunned down by police put all professional sports at a standstill for almost 72 hours.

Clay thinks the sports media and athletes alike were leaving out key details of the incident as the case was developing, as Clay says the sports leagues were still under protest and boycott despite new reports that were slowly coming in that may have cast the incident in a much different light.

Check out the audio above as Clay details why he thinks it’s dangerous to cover and report viral stories that explode on social-media as fact, because they likely only describe a fraction of what really happened in the entirety of the event that took place.
