Clay Travis: Politics Has Killed the NBA's Television Audience

Clay Travis: “The ratings reflect that many fewer of you are watching the NBA. This is the least watched Finals of any of your lives just about. If you’re 40 years old or younger, there has never been a less watched NBA Finals than what we are seeing right now. It’s down 70% from the last time LeBron was in the NBA Finals. It’s a total collapse… A lot of sports have gotten cocky and arrogant and have forgotten about the fans, and that ultimately they’re in the entertainment business. The NBA has done a worse job of that than anybody because they’re basically saying to you over and over again ‘well, if you don’t like it, don’t watch!’ and I think a lot of people have said ‘OK, I’m not going to watch.' As a result they’re taking hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars out of the NBA’s pockets right now. The NBA is going to be in a tough spot when they have to start selling tickets again. I think a lot of people are just going to be like ‘yeah, I’m just not going to re-up with my season tickets.’ Remember, right now they don’t have to worry about selling tickets, and I think this is going to be a major issue whenever they can have crowds again… If we had Adam Silver on this show and we said to him ‘hey, did you expect NBA Finals ratings to be down 70%?’ and he wasn’t trying to be ‘spin zone’, and he was just being honest, he would say ‘OMG, no, I never thought it would be this bad.’ They are in full on panic mode when the ratings come out every morning for these NBA games. The players may not realize it, but they have totally tanked their brand and I don’t know how quickly people are going to come back. LeBron has turned the NBA into sport like hockey where there’s always going to be a diehard group who will watch it every year, but it’s never going to have a broad national appeal… I told you what was going to happen. You put social justice slogans on jerseys, you put messages on the court, you refuse to stand for the National Anthem, and you constantly ram down my throat the fact that I should ‘vote.’ And by the way, you don’t want me to actually vote unless I’m voting against Trump. It would almost be more honest if the NBA just said ‘VOTE FOR JOE BIDEN.’ They’re not telling you to go vote because they want you to go vote for Donald Trump if you’re a Republican, they want you to go vote for Joe Biden.” (Full Segment Above)

Check out the segment above as Clay details why he thinks the league’s ‘social justice’ mission in Orlando will have actually destroyed the league’s future earnings.
