Jason Smith: “This is a bad optic and this is going to be what the World Series becomes about... I get that he was upset, I get that he didn’t want to come out of the game, and I get he didn’t want to NOT celebrate with his teammates, I understand that. But when you say ‘blank this’ after baseball tells you to NOT go out on the field, and he goes back onto the field hugging people, kissing his wife, and he’s got no mask on after a positive COVID-19 test? This is everything we’re fighting against, and you wonder why we can’t get rid of COVID-19 in the United States; because of a situation like this. Justin Turner is a public figure, and this played out on national television in front of millions of people, and this is the worst optic you can have for Major League Baseball. After what they said about him on Wednesday, about an ‘investigation’ into Turner’s behavior, I gotta tell ya, If I put the over/under at 50 games for a suspension for Justin Turner, I think I would take the over. There is no way he’s got a leg to stand on, especially if he was told to not go out there. Not only did he go out there, but he didn’t even go out there being safe... Rob Manfred is PISSED, and is already anti-player. All he’s been hearing the past few months is how he didn’t go harsh on the Houston Astros. He's booed when he handed out the trophy, and he's booed when he’s on television. He is angry right now, and is going to throw the kitchen sink at Justin Turner... If it's 50 games, I think Turner is lucky. This is COVID-19, it's a serious thing and it's serious for the entire country. It's easy to be smart about. The other part about this story is how did he get it, and what did he do? He's in a 'Bubble', how does he get COVID-19? That investigation is going to be very revelatory. Dude, you're going to get 50-60 games." (Full Audio Above)
Listen to Jason Smith explain why he thinks Major League Baseball and Rob Manfred are going to absolutely throw the book at Justin Turner for breaking COVID-19 protocols and celebrating with his teammates after their World Series clinching Game 6. Turner left the game after it was revealed that a test he had taken on Monday had finally come back positive, but forced his way back out onto the field for the post-game festivities against MLB's wishes -- at some points spotted even hugging other players, and seen without a mask on at times while posing for pictures.
Check out the audio above as Jason details why he thinks Turner will face a 50+ game suspension for the terrible optic the league has to deal, and a clear case of blatant insubordination.
