Colin Cowherd: “Baltimore ran for 265 yards, when was the last time they did that and lost?? But they did, and they did because of Lamar Jackson. He wasn’t very good. The criticisms on Lamar coming out were fair. He’s an unbelievable athlete, but we know in NFL history you gotta be able to throw the ball effectively and accurately. He’s struggling and it’s getting bad. We got tape, since Week 1 he’s not good, and completes 57% of his throws. That’s BAD. Everyone in the NFL right now is around 64-68%. Lamar has a weird throwing motion, his accuracy is hot and cold, sometimes his touch is terrible, and everybody has got a book on him now. We’re not saying he can’t be an NFL quarterback, but the difference is that – Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray are hyper-athletic, but the athleticism complements two guys who are GREAT throwers of the football. They throw a BEAUTIFUL ball. With Lamar Jackson, his athleticism is now starting to define who he is. You stop that and you stop him… In the NFL at some point you’re going to have to sit in the pocket on third down. The coaching is way better, the athletes are way better, and they’re going to make you throw on third down. In college and high school you can just take off. He’s just not a great thrower of the football yet, and we have to recalibrate things on Lamar Jackson. He’s still good, but this whole Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Aaron Rodgers category? This morning if you asked me, next 10 years – Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson, I’d take Burrow… The league respects him, and he can do stuff that other guys can’t, but the ‘fear’ part of it is like ‘nah, there’s a way now, drop 8 into coverage and make him make throws up the sideline to guys, make him show some touch, and make him be an accurate thrower of the football.’ There’s now a way to make things uncomfortable for him… The league has figured out some of his deficiencies. Today, I’d take Burrow over Lamar for the next 10 years.” (Full Video Above)
Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he’s suddenly way down on Lamar Jackson, as Colin says all the flaws and criticisms that have followed the reigning MVP since coming out of Louisville have started to catch up to a player who Colin says opposing defenses no longer fear.
Jackson is averaging just 191.9 passer yards per game, and ranks 19th in the league in QBR. His completion percentage is down from 66.1% last season, to 60.5% in 2020, and he’s already been sacked 19 times through 7 games, compared to just 23 times in 15 games last year.
Check out the video above a Colin details why we need to ‘recalibrate’ Lamar’s place among some of the best quarterbacks in the league, saying not only is Jackson nowhere near the levels of Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, and Aaron Rodgers, but even going so far to say he’d rather have Kyler Murray and Joe Burrow for the next 10 years than Lamar.
