A Utah man was injured after a "booby trap" went off in a home while he was making repairs. Police arrested the homeowner, Ryan McManigal, back in July on suspicion of firing a weapon toward police officers and manufacturing explosives.
During a search of his home, authorities found over 4,700 rounds of ammunition and 20 pounds of explosives. Officials had to conduct controlled detonations at the home, which caused significant damage. McManigal's sister, Bridget McGanigal Black, said that her cousin had gone to the house to begin repairing the damage. She said that her brother threatened to booby trap their mother's home in Las Vegas. It turns out he left booby traps in his own home as well.
"I got a call from a cousin of mine this evening, and she explained to me that my other cousin, his name is Jake, Jacob, was over at Ryan's house trying to do repairs on the home. As we recall back in July, I think Pioneer Day, his home had to be partially detonated due to some bombs [Ryan McManigal] was making, so what I'm hearing is that while he was making these repairs, there was a booby trap bomb set and it went off on him," Black told KSTU. "He threatened me that he was going to set up booby traps. He told me that he was going to set up booby traps in my mom's house in Vegas, so it doesn't come as a surprise to me that he would do this in his own home."
The victim, who has not been identified by the police, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with injuries to his lower legs.
McManigal remains in custody and facing charges of attempted aggravated murder and use of a weapon of mass destruction. Authorities have not said if he will face additional charges for the booby trap he allegedly left behind.
