Why LeBron James' Massive Extension Will Be Disastrous For Lakers

Ben Maller: “Is this LeBron James contract extension as big of a ‘no-brainer’ as many in the NBA media gestapo have been saying since this news came out? ABSOLUTELY NOT… I couldn’t believe these big dummies really did this, but then I thought this couldn’t be Rob Pelinka, he’s just a figurehead, and it certainly wasn’t Jeanie Buss, she doesn’t know what she’s doing and the team was TERRIBLE under her leadership until LeBron decided he wanted to make movies at Warner Brothers. LeBron is the one running the show, and he’s the one who gave himself an extension. When you’re the shadow owner you can do whatever you want… To the untrained eye this seems like a great move, but SPOILER ALERT – this has a high percentage chance of backfiring… LeBron’s extension is a sneaky quagmire. LeBron is rapidly approaching what is called the ‘sharp decline in performance’ age. IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE. Not a single athlete has been able to avoid it, and you’re telling me LeBron is going to avoid it?? MY A**! What kind of pixie dust does he have?? At some point the trap door is going to open up and you’re going to take a plunge. Who gives a 36-year-old professional athlete a two-year extension?? Only a team’s front office RUN BY THAT PLAYER! They gave Kobe Bryant a ‘forever’ contract, and he was washed up. He was out there hobbling on one leg and it was pathetic, and the Lakers gave him an extension when he was clearly on the decline… You also deadbolted the door closed on Giannis coming to LA.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Ben Maller explain why he thinks LeBron James’ massive two-year, $85 million extension with the Lakers could end up disastrous for the Lakers, not only because you rarely ever see a player that old get that type of money, but because LeBron effectively giving himself a raise just cost the Lakers any chance at signing Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.

Check out the video above as Maller details why the Lakers just screwed themselves the same way they did when they gave the late Kobe Bryant a massive extension at the end of his career, despite his game obviously having declined, and the team imploding because of it.
