Former NFL Player Thinks Jets Lost Their Game vs. Raiders on Purpose

Clay Travis: “Have you ever seen someone send pressure in that situation like what happened for the Raiders to have a chance to make that play to Henry Ruggs?”

Shawne Merriman: “No, never. I’ve heard a lot of people over the course of time say teams ‘tank’, and in some other sports ‘maybe’, but definitely not in the NFL. There’s no such thing as an NFL team tanking for a number one overall draft pick. Today I question that for the first time. I’ve never seen that ever where you’re up and it’s the end of the game, and you call ‘zero blitz’ with no safety over top. I’ve never anything like that EVER in the history of the game… It is getting really bad over there, and for the first time ever watching football I think I saw a team tanking on purpose in order to get that 1st overall Draft pick.” (Full Interview Above)

Listen to former NFL All-Pro linebacker Shawne Merriman join Outkick the Coverage with Clay Travis and explain why he believes the New York Jets purposely laid down vs. the Raiders in the dying moments of Las Vegas’ miracle victory in the Meadowlands.

The Jets remained the league’s only winless team at 0-12, and kept their slim ‘lead’ on Jacksonville for the first overall pick in 2021 when Derek Carr connected with Henry Ruggs III on a 46-yard Hail Mary touchdown with only five seconds left.

Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was heavily signaled out and blamed for the collapse, and many questioned him, including his own players, on why he called a blitz with zero safety help during a moment in the game where all the Jets had to do was prevent a deep touchdown throw with under 10 seconds left.

Check out the audio above as Merriman details why he never believed NFL teams tanked for better Draft picks until he saw the ending of that New York-Vegas game on Sunday.
