Today on The Doug Gottlieb Show, with Dan Beyer and Aaron Torres filling in for Doug, Baker Mayfield's future with Cleveland is examined in the aftermath of a critical week 17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mayfield, the former first overall draft pick in 2018, has not secured a contract extension with the team and admitted during his postgame interview on Monday night that he has been "beat up" this season. Dan and Aaron divvy up a blame-pie for the Browns' underwhelming season and Mayfield's unreached potential so far.
Dan Beyer: “Everything has gone wrong for Baker Mayfield this season, but I think the Browns are a bit to blame for this because Nick Chubb is a beast! At no point during the season did Nick Chubb get 25 carries a game, and last night it seemed to me that the Browns were bending over backwards to try to find out more about Baker Mayfield, all while he was hurt. It was almost like they were trying to prove their point that this is the reason we can’t give him a contract extension...”
Aaron Torres: “I do think a lot of this falls on Kevin Stefanski, not just because of last night, but because I really feel like players want to play. But it’s on the coach to say, ‘Baker, we appreciate the sacrifice you are trying to make for this team, but you’re doing us no favors by trying to step on the field when you’re less than 100%’...”
