Shohei Ohtani’s Free Agency IS Coming, and It Won’t Be Free

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno took a huge risk by refusing to trade superstar Shohei Ohtani and instead make a run at the playoffs, and after losing 7 straight games since the trade deadline and falling 8 games back of the final wildcard spot, it looks like he’ll be paying the price, one way or another. He’s either going to lose his superstar for a song or pay him an astronomical, record-breaking sum to keep him. But Dan reminds us that the Angels don’t have the same financial resources as many other teams and are unlikely to have the means to sign Ohtani once he becomes a free agent which looks more and more likely as the Halos continue to collapse.

Dan Patrick: “Arte Moreno is not dealing in the same financial pool as some of these other teams, therefore; can he afford Shohei Ohtani? And now you may run the risk that you lose him, and you lose him for, what, a draft pick or whatever they give you. But that’s the risk that they ran...The fact that there’s no dialogue, there’s no whispers, there’s no rumor, no innuendo, nothing! He’s going to be a free agent and there’s nothing free about him!”
