Brady Quinn Reveals the Truth Behind the Process of Naming a Starting QB

Brady Quinn: “There are a lot of things that go into choosing a starting QB for a football team outside of just the performance. For Ohio State and a guy like Devin Brown, he might have a higher ceiling than Kyle McCord, but he might have a lower floor. They’re probably saying they have enough talent, they don’t need a play maker, they just need a distributor because their defense and skill players are so good. That’s the football side of this... But the behind the scenes: Do you know where Marvin Harrison went to high school? St. Joseph’s Prep, the same school as Kyle McCord. There are a number of situations where that stuff factors in, and when you’ve got a great relationship with the high school and they’re pumping out talent, you don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you. I’m not saying that’s a HUGE determining factor, but it doesn’t hurt... High School coaches have a huge impact on where kids decide to go.”
LaVar Arrington: “You’re right, it’s all about you go about handling things. People want to have a good experience and will remember how they’re interacted with... It’s interesting when you’re going through a recruiting process with a player. Especially with a QB, because the process is treated so much differently than any other position.”

2 Pros and a Cup of Joe’s Brady Quinn, LaVar Arrington and Jonas Knox react to the news of Ohio State naming Kyle McCord their starting QB heading into the season. Although McCord will start, HC Ryan Day is open to backup Devin Brown getting reps during the team’s season opener as well. Brady and LaVar dive into the politics off the field that go into recruiting, and even naming a starting QB. Listen to the full segment above!
