Doug Gottlieb: “You go back two years ago and Jalen Hurts was a game-manager. They had three first-round picks and many thought those three first-round picks would be used to get them the next star quarterback, but Hurts was magnificent last year. He played well, he improved, they played the softest schedule in the NFL, he had a great play-caller in Shane Steichen, and he had elite-level talent surrounding him. Offensive line was dominant, two tremendous wide receivers, a big-time running game, and the play-calling that allowed him to run the football and play 11-on-11 football. It all culminated in an NFC Championship. Even though they had won all their games up until this weekend, we we’re telling you -- ‘ya know, they don’t look great.’ He went from game-manager to second-highest paid quarterback on the planet... and what we saw this weekend was, I don’t want to say a tipping point, but there had been moments where Jalen wasn’t sharp. Week 1 it was ‘he didn’t take any reps preseason, Week 2 it was ‘he’s still feeling out a new play-caller, Week 3 was all this different stuff. Now he throws three picks in a game and loses them a game. This is not Gottlieb going on air and saying ‘JALEN HURTS STINKS! HE’S STEALING MONEY!’, but there was some limitations you saw him have when he was at Alabama, some limitations at Oklahoma, some limitations previously from his time with the Eagles, and they didn’t just all go away. Even in the Super Bowl where he played well, there were a couple throws that were a throw up and hope, and his wide receivers just went up and made a play. That’s just the reality of it. He ain’t one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL. The top five quarterbacks in the NFL are the top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL generally for two or three years, sometimes through multiple play-callers, and through tough situations. People are kind of figuring him out a little bit, and we will see if there’s this next wave of Jalen Hurts, and if he can evolve as people are taking away some of his favorite things and making him do some things he doesn’t love doing. He’s not crazy accurate at times, and he’s not awesome at going through the progressions. He’s everything you want off the football field, everything you want as a person and as a leader, the question has always been about his football talent. Is he elite? How do you go from being a game-manager to a superstar in just one off-season? That seems weird and now there’s been some regression towards the mean. It’s not me saying Jalen Hurts stinks, it’s like, man, we go crazy when guys put together some games, when there’s some other factors at play that sometimes make people look a little bit better than they are. He’s good, he’s fine, he’s not Mahomes, he’s not Herbert, he’s not Allen. He’s not one of those guys, those guys are at a different level. Those guys can lose their best player and still figure it out and find a way. How good is Jalen Hurts ‘really’? He’s good, he’s better than I thought. Is he ‘great’? I don’t buy that.” (Full Segment Above)
Watch Doug Gottlieb discuss the Philadelphia Eagles’ shocking loss to the Aaron Rodgers and Sauce Gardner-less Jets on Sunday, and explain why he thinks Jalen Hurts’ shortcomings as a quarterback finally reared their ugly head again.
Check out the segment above as Gottlieb details why he doesn’t think Hurts is a ‘great’ QB, nor was he ever even during his MVP campaign last season, as Gottlieb says the real Hurts is regressing back towards the mean after a career-year in 2022.
