Jason Smith: “The Falcons and Chargers completed interviews for head coach with Jim Harbaugh... At the same time he’s interviewing for head coaching jobs, according to many reports, he’s throwing down the hammer and asking for a lot in negotiations to stay at Michigan. The two big clauses that he’s asking for involves if something happens to him for a long-term suspension for cheating – so he wants more protection if he does get suspended -- and he wants his buyout to be way less if he ever wants to go to the NFL... Look, I’m a Michigan family, my wife is a Michigan family – I'll tell you this right now, if I’m Michigan I’d just say ‘YOU KNOW WHAT, DUDE... GO! GO TO THE NFL!’... Obviously, there is nothing we can do that is going to make you want to stay. I’m sorry we asked you to take a pay cut but you were 2-4 in 2020 and you hadn’t beaten Ohio State. Tell me another coach that we’ve ever talked about saying ‘I WANNA STAY WHERE I AM, YET I’M ACTIVELY INTERVIEWING WITH OTHER PLACES!’... Nobody! There is not one person who has done that. If you REALLY wanna stay, you just won the National bleepin’ Championship, you’ve beaten Ohio State three times, you’ve won three straight Big Tens, nobody has had this success at Michigan in two decades... If you really wanna stay it’s ‘OK, LET’S FIGURE OUT A NEW DEAL AND WE’RE GOING TO HAMMER SOMETHING OUT’... But instead it’s another year where he’s actively interviewing with the NFL. Obviously, now that he’s won the National Championship and he’s still looking to go, that’s an itch that he’s going to want to scratch at some point. He wants to go to the NFL because he wants to win the Super Bowl because he fell just short. Mission accomplished at Michigan, what else is he going to do at Michigan? If he loses a couple games it’s ‘LET'S GET RID OF THE GUY!’... I guarantee if you polled the Michigan alumni, they would come out and say ‘YEAH... IF HE STAYS, HE STAYS, IF HE GOES, HE GOES’... They’ve never given him that big hug, although they love him now because they just won the championship. It’s obvious he wants to go, so if I’m Michigan, at this point I just say ‘YOU KNOW WHAT, DUDE, GO! WE’RE NOT GOING TO DO THIS EVERY YEAR! YOU’RE NOT GOING TO HOLD THE PROGRAM HOSTAGE EVERY YEAR WITH MORE THINGS YOU WANT AND MORE INTERVIEWS! JUST GO! GO THE NFL, WE’RE DONE!’... I know you won a national title, that’s awesome, but you’re never going to be happy here and you’re just looking for a little bit more. Eventually you gotta say ‘JUST GO!'"
Listen to Jason Smith of Fox Sports Radio’s The Jason Smith Show explain why Michigan football needs to outright sever ties with head coach Jim Harbaugh, and end this never-ending drama when it comes to Harbaugh’s compulsive flirtation with the NFL.
Check out the segment above as Smith details why it’s not fair for Harbaugh to hold Michigan ‘hostage’ every year, and adds that the program winning the National Championship dilutes their need for Harbaugh, who could very well end up receiving a lengthy suspension from the NCAA in relation to Michigan football's sign-stealing cheating scandal.
