Doug Gottlieb: Why J.J. Redick Will Succeed As the Lakers Next Head Coach

Doug Gottlieb: “The difference at my level [college basketball] to JJ Redick’s level in the NBA is you can literally hire whoever you want. In the NBA, you can have as many assistants as you want. I’m a big proponent of that. Hire people who know what you don’t know and then let them do their job. The issue that he’ll run into is who are those people he’s going to hire and is he hiring them or is Rob Pelinka hiring them? The number one attribute you gotta have [as an assistant coach] is you gotta be loyal. You gotta be loyal to the cause, loyal to the guy. There’s gonna be people who take shots at JJ Redick and you have to be willing to take those bullets and not question him in public.
Can he do it? Yeah, I think he can do it. Usually it’s the point guards who can do it because when you play point guard in the NBA, you’ve been processing stuff anyway. But yeah, he can do it; of course he can do it. Does he need help with practice plans? Sure. Does he need help with rotations? Absolutely. He’s played for a bunch of coaches and he’s done it forever. I do think on some levels we overrate the ‘experience’ factor and you HAVE to have experience as a coach. When you’ve spent a decade in the NBA, you’ve seen everything.”

Listen to Doug Gottlieb of Fox Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show explain why he thinks former NBA sharpshooter J.J. Redick will be fine as a potential new head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Check out the audio above as Gottlieb details why the ‘experience’ factor is overrated when it comes to the coaching in the NBA, and that a 10+-year veteran like Redick has ‘seen it all’ and wouldn’t need a crash course in coaching firsthand to understand how the position works.
