Kansas City Chiefs second-year defensive lineman B.J. Thompson Jr. was identified as the player who suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a special teams meeting at the team's facility Thursday (June 6) morning, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.
Thompson, 25, who was selected by the Chiefs at No. 166 overall in the fifth-round of the 2023 NFL Draft and appeared in one game during his rookie season, is reported to be in stable condition after being quickly treated by the team's medical staff before an ambulance was called, according to Pelissero. The former Stephen F. Austin State University standout wasn't initially named, but identified as "a backup defensive lineman," in the initial report of the medical incident, which resulted in practice being canceled.
The Chiefs' Thursday media availability was re-scheduled for Friday (June 7). No additional details on the incident were immediately made available at the time of publication.
The Chiefs are currently in Phase 3 of their voluntary offseason program with mandatory minicamp scheduled to start on June 11. Kansas City is less than four full months removed from winning its second consecutive Super Bowl and third in five years during a 25-22 overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
The Chiefs' offseason has included several notable headlines including second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice's multiple arrests, kicker Harrison Butker's controversial comments made during a college commencement ceremony, the trade of former starting cornerback L'Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans, the signing of free agent wide receiver Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown, quarterback Patrick Mahomes' reworked contract and tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones' both agreeing to record-setting contract extensions.
