Doug Gottlieb Says Bronny James Wouldn't Even Start on His Green Bay Team

Listen to Doug Gottlieb of Fox Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show respond to fellow Fox Sports Radio host Dan Patrick after Dan called Gottlieb out for ‘trolling’ when Gottlieb said that Bronny James would have a tough time finding a position in Gottlieb’s Wisconsin-Green Bay starting lineup.

Gottlieb, who recently accepted a position to be the men’s basketball coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay, was responding to a user on X who asked him if Bronny would start for his team. Gottlieb responded by saying ‘He would compete to start. But while I like how he moves the ball and defends, he wouldn’t be my point. My wings are bigger, and without seeing him with us, I think it would be hard for him to start, to be honest.’

Check out the segment below as Gottlieb fires back at Dan, saying we need to stop this trend of calling anyone with brutally honest and unadulterated opinions as ‘haters’ and ‘trolls’, when really it’s just the point of view from someone who isn’t afraid to tell the cold, hard truth.

Doug Gottlieb: “We’ve done this thing where no one is ever allowed to be honest anymore... I’ve not gotten the analysis for every player right, and as a matter of fact, I’ve gotten some very wrong... But this one I’ve got right. Bronny James is struggling. I’m not dancing on his grave, I’m not laughing at him -- I’m telling you, I know what it takes to make an NBA team, and I saw all of this coming. People make it out that you’re ‘hating’ or even ‘trolling’ when you give an opinion that is not seen as positive towards Bronny James.
A couple days ago I was asked on Twitter if Bronny James would start for my team in Wisconsin. My answer was ‘he would compete to start, but while I like how he moves the ball and defends, he wouldn’t be my point, and I don’t view him as a point guard. He doesn’t want the ball, he doesn’t run a team, he doesn’t want to defend the point guard. He doesn’t play like a point. He wouldn’t be my point. My wings are bigger, and without seeing him with us, I think it would be hard for him to start, to be honest.’
Here’s what Dan Patrick said about that tweet:

‘I do like that Doug Gottlieb was trolling people and somehow got a chance to use Bronny James into a story about Doug’s new job as the head coach of Wisconsin-Green Bay basketball team where Doug says ‘Bronny probably wouldn’t start for my team at Wisconsin-Green Bay.’ To which I’d say: ‘Doug, that’s kind of an indictment on your coaching.’ He can’t start for your team?? Yeah, he would be able to start for your team at Wisconsin-Green Bay. But Doug did what you’re supposed to do in this business. He trolled peopled and probably got a lot of clicks there.’

Somebody asks me a question and I answered the question about my team. That’s an ‘indictment’ on my coaching? What are you talking about? Dan, you can text me and ask me about my roster.  ‘WELL, WHO DO YOU HAVE STARTING AT THE WINGS??’ I have a young man named Anthony Roy, who will very likely start for me at a wing. He was an N.A.I.A. All-American. He’s well-traveled, we are his fifth school. He’s older, more experienced, and frankly, he’s a better player. I have to have somebody who can score and Anthony Roy can score. The other wing I have a lot of other options. One of which is Foster Wonders who is an ELITE shooter and he’s 6’5”. I have Donovan Santoro, who played at Providence last year, who is 6’8”. If you actually read my tweet, it’s an accurate depiction of what I think of him. Bronny is not a point guard. My point guard would be Jeremiah Johnson, very likely. Johnson is a top 150 recruit and he’s actually older than Bronny James. I think he’s going to be a better pro prospect than Bronny James.
None of this is ‘trolling.’ All I’ve ever said was that it was joke he was a McDonald’s All-American last year, and it’s equally as laughable he was drafted this year. We put a young man in a position to fail. What’s very likely to happen now is you kill any of his confidence, and now even if he ever develops and becomes good enough to get real minutes in the NBA, no one’s going to take it seriously. J.J. Redick said he ‘earned it’ because he ‘worked hard’??
Dan, I actually coached AAU basketball, so I know what the hell I’m talking about. I’m just sitting here telling you what I see and what I think. I don’t say things for effect, I don’t care. I naturally piss people off. It’s a gift. But if you got pissed over me telling you what my actual basketball analysis of Bronny James is, that’s on YOU, not on me. I stand by it. I like how he guards, I like how he moves the ball, I like how he gets along with teammates, but he wouldn’t be my starting point. He’s definitely not better than Anthony Roy for what I need, and If I had a third spot for him it would be tough. It’s not a ‘no, never’, it’s a ‘it would be tough.’"
