The Real Reason the Chargers Won't Give Colin Kaepernick a Coaching Gig

Watch Doug Gottlieb, guest-hosting on The Dan Patrick Show, explain the real reason why he doesn’t think Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers are going to offer controversial free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick a job on their coaching staff, despite Kaepernick at one time being Harbaugh’s starting quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers.

Check out the segment above as Gottlieb details why he thinks the Chargers are now turning away from their interests in Kaepernick as a coach because in reality he’s trying to use those negotiations to convince the team to sign the 37-year-old as a backup quarterback.

Doug Gottlieb: [reading from an article] ‘Colin Kaepernick recently told Sky Sports that he still wants to play in the NFL. Earlier this week, new Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he wants his former quarterback in the NFL, but as a member of his coaching staff’...
Kaepernick’s shot of getting back into the NFL was ruined by his girlfriend. He was going to sign with the Ravens, and then his girlfriend put out a meme of Django Unchained and compared it to Steve Bisciotti, who’s the owner of the Ravens. So, you’re the owner of the Ravens and you’re called a ‘slave owner’ by a guy who doesn’t have a job in the NFL. Like ‘thanks, but no thanks.’
Harbaugh probably called him up ‘Hey, just come to camp, work with Herbert, you know this offense, you’ve played in this offense, you’re AWESOME in this offense, just teach it to Justin Herbert and see if you want to do the coaching thing’... And I’m guessing that Kaepernick is like ‘I STILL WANNA PLAY!’... And he’s like ‘yeahhhhh, we’re not doing that.’
A big reason why guys have never given Kaepernick a shot is not because they didn’t wanna give him a shot, it’s because if you cut him, are you cutting him because of his political beliefs, or cutting him because of his race? Nobody wants to be called a ‘racist’ when you cut a third-string quarterback. Kaepernick’s ‘football family’ is trying to take care of him and give him an opportunity to get back into the league in an offense that he knows, and just learn to be a coach, but he probably still wants to play and hasn’t given up the pipedream. He’s just not dealing with reality, and when you read that -- that strikes me as Jim Harbaugh like ‘you’re not gonna be a player, and you don’t wanna coach.’ He’s not basing these things in reality.
For most athletes, it’s hard to say you can’t still do it. He’s crazy, and when I say that, I mean he has a completely tilted view of the world. If he could win football games, he would be a quarterback in the NFL. Deshaun Watson was accused of some sort of sexual improprieties by FOURTY women and signed the largest guaranteed contract in the history of the league. Why? Because the Browns thought he could win football games, and they haven’t had a good quarterback in forever. That’s the reality of it. The whole Eric Bieniemy nonsense... Eric Bieniemy didn’t not get a job because he’s Black, he couldn’t get a job because he couldn’t get along with people. You have to be a uniter as a head coach. He didn’t do well in interviews because he didn’t dive in to all the nuances of running a program. There is only ONE agenda in professional sports... Winning. Look at the Kansas City Chiefs. They have a wide receiver with video of him leaving the scene of a hit-and-run. They’re like ‘WE WILL LET THE LEGAL PROCESS PLAY OUT!’... No, they needed a wide receiver. Play him until somebody says you can’t play him. I wish it was about something else but it’s not.
Colin Kaepernick was good for like a year and a half. He’s basically Scott Mitchell. Let’s get down to the brass tacks: he lost his job because he wasn’t that good. THAT’S IT. The other stuff made it that he couldn’t be a backup quarterback. And he never wanted to be a backup quarterback because a backup quarterback is about somebody else. Colin Kaepernick has not been reasonable for a long time.
The first team he went and visited was the Seahawks. Do you remember what Pete Carroll said when he left his visit at the Seahawks? He said ‘LISTEN, HE’S A STARTER!’... Do you know what that translates to? ‘We brought him in, we love ya, but we want you to be a backup to Russ’, and he’s like ‘I WANNA BE A STARTER!’.. It had nothing to do with being blackballed. This dude has never known who he actually is as a football player. Why did Chase Daniel last as long as he did in the NFL? Because at some point he knew what he was. ‘I’m just here to get that other guy ready. It’s not about me, it’s about the team.’ Guys say it’s the ‘greatest job in the world’ but you gotta sacrifice your ego, and he’s never been able to do that.
I don’t wanna say he’s insane, but he’s been completely irrational throughout so many of these stages. That's what I heard from Harbaugh.. ‘Hey, I wanted to get him here, he’d be a perfect fit here to just be a coach and he wants to be a player – that ain’t happening. And he doesnt wanna be a coach – so that ain’t happening.’”
