Don't Be Surprised If Jason Witten Becomes Cowboys' Head Coach

Jason Witten and Jason Garrett

Jason Witten has decided to dawn the cape once again at the tight end position for the Dallas Cowboys. He had one year at the booth and felt like there was some unfinished business with his Cowboys team that managed to storm into the NFL Playoffs in his absence but came up short against the Los Angeles Rams.

Doug Gottlieb brought on Matt Mosley of the Dallas Morning News to get his take on the return of Witten and here's what he said:

My reaction to Witten is not one of shock at all. I think that this has been in the works for a while. I think there was a bail-out plan almost executed during the season. He was looking for an escape hatch from that Monday Night Football booth...He's dealt with people not liking him or opposing fans maybe not liking him. I've known Jason for a long time, and he had never dealt with the kind of criticism and twitter angst/fury that he dealt with this season.

Mosley continues and then drops this audio nugget:

This gets him out of the booth into the Cowboys locker room where he's more comfortable, and then we can see if Jason Witten becomes the future head coach of the Dallas Cowboys...that would not surprise me at all.

Mosley on Why he thinks this right now:

If this thing goes south at all, they're gonna be looking for a new head coach. It's easier to take Witten from the team than take him straight from the booth.
