LeBron James is The Godfather in Cleveland at the moment. With the news that David Griffin was fired as GM, and Chauncey Billups would be joining the team in some capacity, it was just another layered move by LeBron James and his team of executives that surround him.
With Maverick Carter controlling the brand, Ty Lue as the head coach, and many others that are close to LeBron holding high-influence positions within the team and franchise, it's clear who is calling the shots. LeBron, however, can continue to claim ignorance on anything related to these topics, simply because he is focused on the court and can't control everything his friends do.
