Shocking video went viral on Friday afternoon at the 2021 Scottish Open after a random fan casually walked up to four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy and literally snatched a club out of the former world no. 1's bag.
Cameras show McIlroy standing around the tee box at the 10th hole with Spanish golfer Jon Rahm and McIlroy's caddy checking his scorecard when an unidentified man walks into the shot undeterred, nonchalantly removes the headcover off an iron, and then walks off as McIlroy, Rahm, and McIlroy’s caddie just stare in astonishment of what happened.
The fan then walks over to the other side of the tee box and awkwardly appears to address the headcover like he's about to hit it off a tee. Security then appears to question the man and talk him down to leave the course, as he then walks by McIlory a second time and hands the caddie back the club, before being escorted off the course and later being arrested.
Rahm brushed it off and joked about the bizarre incident saying "He [the fan] came in so confident and we thought he was going to take a picture or something. We thought he was maybe part of the camera crew or a photographer. Me and Rory didn't say anything. He was holding a six iron and I didn't want to get hurt. It didn't put anyone off. If anything it put a smile on our faces. It will be a pretty good story to tell in the future."
Rory currently sits in a tie for 73rd place at -1 for the tournament after round 1, and six strokes back of leader Jack Senior at -7 in the European Tour event. Rahm is tied for fourth at -5.
