Former NFL Doctor Says Chances Are Low that Alex Smith Starts in Week 15

Dr. David Chao: “Alex Smith being pulled in the second half is more about – not the safety of his leg, but the safety of his overall body, his effectiveness, and his ability to play through, because of the type of brace he has, and the already weakened calf muscle and now calf strain. Ron Rivera and company did him a solid because Alex Smith would have probably stayed in the game… Because of that, I don’t think the calf strain is going to get better that quickly, partly because he’s already lost part of his calf. I think it’s likely that it’s Dwayne Haskins this next week. I think Alex Smith was on the sideline and was ready to come back in if Haskins got hurt, but I think with these hurdles, as fantastic as Alex Smith has done, I don’t know, I gotta lean towards it’s going to be Dwayne Haskins moving forward.” (Full Segment Above)

Listen to former NFL team physician Dr. David Chao, who worked with the formerly known San Diego Chargers for 17 years, break down the logistics of Alex Smith’s calf injury, and detail why he doesn’t believe Smith will be ready to start in Week 15 versus the Seattle Seahawks.

Washington has not yet made a decision who their quarterback will be for this critical game to remain in sole possession of first place in the NFC East, but Dr. Chao says Smith’s calf injury -- an injury that is affecting the same leg he nearly had amputated in 2018 after a catastrophic infection -- is going to be difficult to heal.
