Why Baker Mayfield Can No Longer Be Trusted in Cleveland

Ben Maller: “Do the Browns have a Baker Mayfield problem? I am nodding my head ‘YES’. Baker Mayfield going forward continues to be the stumbling block for the Browns. They are legitimate defensively, they are legitimate running the football, but the quarterback position is the issue. The first couple weeks Baker Mayfield was not the problem and some Baker Mayfield fanboys were saying ‘hE’s aN mVp!’ -- WRONG, life comes at you fast. Baker Mayfield has fallen over like a tree in the forest. On the ‘Maller Report Card’, Baker Mayfield gets an (F-). He completed the game completing less than 50% of his passes for 4.7 yards per attempt. No touchdowns, no interceptions, three sacks, and a 59.5 passer rating. ROTTEN EGGS is the way you could describe the performance of Baker Mayfield. The people around the Browns can downplay this but I strongly disagree. The Vikings had the 26th ranked pass defense coming into that game and the Cleveland passing attack was absolutely non-existent… Week after week you know the defense and running game will be there, but when you get further down the line you have to know that Baker Mayfield is going to be there, but you can’t trust this guy. There is no trust with Baker Mayfield because randomly he has these hiccups where he is frustratingly inconsistent. The great unknown for the Browns is Baker Mayfield. From week-to-week, half-to-half-, quarter-to-quarter, minute-to-minute, second-to-second, you don’t know what you’re going to get from Baker Mayfield, and this becomes a bigger issue for the front office. The komodo dragon in the room is Baker Mayfield’s contractual status going forward. The Browns made the right call on not giving Baker the forever contract but that’s looming on the horizon. Beyond closed doors these people have to know that Baker Mayfield is a wildcard and you can’t rely on this guy. If you give the big money to Baker Mayfield, you’re much more likely to have Jared Goff 2.0 or Carson Wentz 2.0.” (Full Audio Above)

Listen to Ben Maller explain why he thinks the Cleveland Browns should shy away from giving Baker Mayfield a massive long-term extension at the end of this season, as Maller believes Mayfield could become the second-coming of Jared Goff and Carson Wentz as underserving high profile draft picks who ended up being alarmingly overpaid.
