Doug Gottlieb: The Real Reason Why the Ravens Signed Odell Beckham Jr.

Doug Gottlieb: “Odell Beckham signs with the Baltimore Ravens… Hmmm. Baltimore Ravens? Wait, is Lamar Jackson their quarterback or not their quarterback? And why would you do this?? I have a hypothesis. The hypothesis is the Ravens are trying as hard as they can to do it their way and change this entire narrative of ‘the Ravens haven't surrounded him with good enough players.’ You can say whatever you want about how much they should pay him, how many years guaranteed, and how they handled it, but I believe— Rashad Bateman, going back to the 2021 Draft is a wide receiver in the first round. In 2020, second round, J.K Dobbins. He got hurt but JK Dobbins was a great pass-catching running back. You look at Marquis Brown the year before was a first-round draft pick. They even took Miles Boykin in the third round. This is after drafting Lamar Jackson in the first round and surrounding him with Mark Andrews. The point is that they're trying to say ‘look we've given him everything and we've given him a three-year guaranteed contract at the same type of money of all the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. Lamar Jackson not wanting to play for us is a Lamar Jackson decision, not a Ravens decision.' I think this shifts a lot of the power to the hands of the Ravens, which is ‘hey, look man, you're still under contract with us for 32 million dollars, we'd still like to re-sign you long-term, we've surrounded you with Andrews, Dobbins, Rashad Bateman, now you have Odell Beckham Jr., you're going to have Ronnie Stanley back who's been hurt at left tackle, who we paid more than anybody else. We've given you EVERYTHING, all you gotta do is come here and play, and we'll give you a gigantic three-year guaranteed contract.' I think it's about power, control, and the Ravens tried to re-take it with the move yesterday… I think it’s a little bit of a control thing, not just window dressing.” (Full Segment Above)

Watch Doug Gottlieb of Fox Sports Radio explain his hypothesis on why the Baltimore Ravens signed Odell Beckham Jr. over the weekend, which surprised many in league circles who didn’t see the quarterback-less Ravens as a landing spot for the disgruntled former star wide out looking to revitalize his once sparkling career.

Check out the segment above as Gottlieb details why the move wasn’t cute window shopping, but rather the Ravens trying to ‘control the narrative’ when it comes to bad publicity in their contract hostage situation with Lamar.
