The NFL's headlines over the past year have been dominated by negative story lines including a steady decline in ratings, profound research revealing the link between the sport of football and CTE, and a growing disconnect between owners and its players. Thursday Night Football, however, spotlighted the biggest problem facing the nation's most popular sport: the loss of stars due to injury.

Seahawks S Earl Thomas was already out heading into the divisional match up in Arizona, but a season-ending injury to Richard Sherman only added to the ever-increasing amount of big-name players ending their season far too early.
