Saturday (July 17) night's game between the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres was halted after shots were fired outside the stadium. Fans and players rushed for cover in the middle of the sixth inning after multiple shots rang out near the third-base side of Nationals Park.
Some fans ran onto the field and hid in the bullpen and dugout, while others rushed outside and potentially into danger. The stadium posted a message on the jumbotron, and the public address announcer told fans to remain inside the stadium.
Authorities found two people with gunshot wounds at the scene and said that two other people checked themselves into a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. They did not say what sparked the shooting but said it was not related to the game and that there is no threat to the public.
Eventually, people were allowed to leave the stadium and were told to exit through the right-field and center-field gates.
The Washington Nationals said that the game will resume on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET. The originally scheduled game will be played 25-45 minutes after the first game is completed. Both games will be nine-inning games.
The Padres were leading 8-4 when the game was postponed.
The TV broadcast appeared to capture the sound of the gunshots as players walked off the field.
