Colin Cowherd: Damian Lillard May Become Irrelevant if He Stays in Portland

Colin Cowherd: “Rebuilds are tough in the NBA. They’re easier if you’re the Lakers and a glamour franchise,  or the Miami Heat with no state tax. There are easier places to attract free agents and rebuild quickly – Portland is NOT one of them. The Pelicans are finalizing a deal to acquire Portland guard CJ McCollum. He’s hurt but he’s a good player. They already shipped Norman Powell and Robert Covington to the Clippers, so that’s three of their good pieces. What’s left? Nurkic who has injury issues and Dame Lillard, who has played poorly this year and is banged up. The Blazers said they plan to rebuild around Damian Lillard. You think he wants to stay?? Be very careful blowing up your franchise and rebuilding, Orlando has been doing that for like ten years. It’s easier in the NFL, and it’s easier when you’re the Lakers and Yankees and you can buy players, but in the NBA, Portland is geographically isolated, not close to a championship team, a lot of players don’t want to go up to Portland in the winter, they’re not very good right now, and Damian Lillard looks around at Golden State, Phoenix, the Clippers, the Lakers, Denver, where’s Portland?? This could be ten years of irrelevance, you gotta be careful on this. I like Jalen Suggs, he was great at Gonzaga, but you watch him this year for Orlando? Yeah, me neither. This is a very difficult league to start over. What’s on the market that’s so attractive? Ben Simmons?? James Harden? PASS. I heard today ‘WESTBROOK TO THE BLAZERS!’ You think they’re fired up about that in the Rose City?? The Blazers should have moved around these pieces years ago and Dame was probably too loyal and should have moved a year ago. This feels like a big mess to me.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why he fears that 31-year-old Damian Lillard could be captaining a sinking ship in Portland that could see him spend the final years of the prime on a rebuilding franchise with zero chance to contend.

The Blazers traded roster mainstays CJ McCollum and Robert Covington this week, throwing up the white flag in a season where Portland currently sits at 12 games under .500.

Check out the video above as Colin details why Lillard could risk becoming irrelevant on a franchise that is greatly hurt geographically when it comes to attracting elite free agents.
