Colin Cowherd Says Bears Moving On From Justin Fields Is An 'Easy' Decision

Colin Cowherd: “I think it’s a really easy decision to move off him [Justin Fields]. I’ve had two ex-NFL stars – and these guys are connected – tell me that Chicago is keeping Justin Fields. Players are very connected and they’re hearing things that Chicago will keep him but I would not. There’s three things you have to acknowledge if you’re not a fanboy. Any reasonable person would have to acknowledge when looking at quarterbacks – 1) The rules help quarterbacks much more. 2) There’s a higher level of offensive coaching. Pro offensive coaching now is much better than it was 15 years ago. 3) Quarterbacks are getting more tutoring in high school and college. Special camps, 7-on-7s, they have to be better. I’ve judged quarterbacks differently the last decade than I have the last 50-60 years. I hold them to a higher standard. Thanksgiving of year two I make a decision. I made decision year two at Thanksgiving that Daniel Jones is not the guy, and I think I’m right. Take the emotion out of it, take the amazing YouTube highlights out of it... If you’ve never seen him play and you just looked at the numbers, it’s AWFUL. His passer rating through 37 starts is an 82. Forty touchdown passes and 30 picks. Ten and 27 record. People go ‘HE’S GOT 14 RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS!’... Okay, if you’re going to count total touchdowns then you have to count total turnovers. He’s got more than one a game. Forty-one giveaways in 37 games. That’s not the worst part... He’s missed 11 starts. That’s HORRIBLE. You can’t miss that many starts in the NFL. If you are [missing that many games] – Burrow, Lamar Jackson – you gotta be GREAT. You can’t be below-average and miss 11 starts in three years. Here’s an uncomfortable truth with Justin Fields... The only quarterback in the NFL over the last three seasons that is inarguable a worse passer – Zach Wilson. That’s it. I know you like the highlights, but misses games, turnovers, doesn’t win... Don’t listen to these analytic nerds that say ‘winning is not a quarterback stat.’ If you’re great -- Lamar Jackson is worth 11 points a game, I think that’s KIND OF crucial. Bears fans and Bears media are trying to see something that does not exist. There are no wins, there’s a lot of injuries, there’s a lot of fumbles... Beating Atlanta, a dome team, in snowy and windy weather last week is not something to crown yourself over. To me, it’s easy. I get Caleb, who is a better prospect, more accurate passer, and I can restart the clock. I’d move him to Atlanta, preferably, maybe Washington, for a second-round pick. Players tend to love ‘great athletes’, even if they don’t help in winning. For years and years everyone loved Melo [Carmelo Anthony], but he wasn’t a winning player. Everybody ‘loves’ Westbrook, great athlete. Be very careful about what players, fans, and media say. Just follow the data.” (Full Segment Above)

Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s ‘The Herd’ explain why he thinks it’s an ‘easy’ decision for the Chicago Bears to move off 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields in favor of taking USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the no. 1 overall pick they now own from last year’s trade with the Carolina Panthers that netted Carolina former Alabama QB Bryce Young.

Check out the segment above as Colin details why Bears ‘fanboys’ shouldn’t obsess over four Chicago wins in their last five games, adding that Fields has a career record of 10-27, with an 82.6 passer rating in three turnover-filled seasons.
