Doug Gottlieb: “Here’s something you won’t hear from anybody else... ‘Damn, Nick Saban can coach his ass off’... You’re like ‘What do you mean?’... I mean, Milroe can’t throw. And when I say ‘can’t throw’, I don’t mean he can’t physically throw a football. He’s just not an accurate thrower of the football on short or intermediate stuff, and it’s not like he’s going to stand there and go through his progression reads. Alabama in many ways went backwards this year from where they had been. From Jalen Hurts, who was limited as a thrower but not as much as Milroe, to Tua – who was limited as an athlete, to Mac Jones – who is really limited as an athlete, but [all] guys who are starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Milroe probably plays in the NFL but not as a quarterback. I felt really bad for Bill O’Brien up until yesterday. Milroe said that Bill O’Brien told him he ‘wasn’t a quarterback’ and that he used that to fuel him. Did you watch the kid play last night [Monday]? You have to contextualize this. Is he a quarterback? Well, he played quarterback and they played for a National Championship in the semifinals, and they won the SEC Championship, but to me, it signifies how great Saban is. This is not the offense that Tommy Rees wanted to run, you just have limitations there. He’s limited as a thrower. Remember, before they had some of these guys, they had years where they were limited. Even Hurts’ year when they won the SEC and he was a freshman, there were some limitations. Michigan is big-time, they are a LOADED football team. This is supposed to be their year and it took them overtime to beat Alabama. My takeaway is ‘man, Saban and his staff can really coach’. The idea that Bill O’Brien was a ‘racist’ is so f**king stupid, it’s just beyond words. He said what he meant. He probably said to Milroe ‘Hey, dude, if you want to play at Alabama, you probably need a different position’ because I’m guessing he probably thought ‘hey, at some point we’re going to get in the portal and sign one of these guys that can throw a football and you’re not that.’ Ultimately that limitation at quarterback comes back to get you.” (Full Segment Above)
Watch Doug Gottlieb of Fox Sports Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show explain why he doesn’t think Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe will ever play in the quarterback in the NFL despite the red-shirt sophomore finishing sixth in Heisman voting, and ranking 13th in the country in QBR.
Milroe’s Crimson Tide fell to the top-seeded Michigan Wolverines in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff on Monday night, with Milroe only throwing for 116 yards against Michigan’s no. 1 ranked defense, and fumbling away a potential touchdown-clinching drive late in the fourth quarter.
For the season, Milroe threw for 2,834 yards on 65.8% passing, and accounted for 35 touchdowns (12 rushing), but took 44 sacks and posted a 260+ passing yard game just once.
Check out the video above as Gottlieb says he doesn’t think Milroe will ever play in the NFL unless it’s a position other than quarterback, citing his lack of accuracy and limited competence going through his progressions, and adding that his putrid game against Michigan showed off his shortcomings as a passer.
