Colin Cowherd: End this 'Dumb' U.S. Olympics Freeze-Out of Caitlin Clark

Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s The Herd call out the WNBA and women’s basketball for their United States Olympic basketball team freeze-out of Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, as Colin says ongoing injuries to members of the U.S. women's national team should pave the way for Clark’s admission onto a team that she already should have been named to.

Clark currently leads the WNBA in assists per game, and is one of only two players in the entire league averaging at least 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Check out the segment below as Colin ripped the ‘insular and rigid’ WNBA for failing to capitalize on showcasing their league’s most popular player at the upcoming Summer Games in Paris later this month, and quipped ‘don’t double down on dumb’ when mentioning how the Olympic selection can’t possibly screw this up again if given the chance to add Clark to the roster.

Colin Cowherd: “Diana Taurasi is injured and it may open the door for Caitlin Clark to make the Olympic team. Women’s basketball didn’t quite know how handle Caitlin Clark. It reminds me of when Taylor Swift became a billionaire with the 'Eras Tour', and in ten minutes they couldn’t supply enough tickets and Ticketmaster had to apologize. They were completely overwhelmed, and I think that’s what women’s basketball was with Caitlin Clark. They knew a year out she was gonna be the no. 1 pick, they give her the toughest early schedule in the league – and remember, the Indiana Fever were the worst team. So she comes in, they start 1-8, they have to play quality veteran teams who had been in the playoffs, Indiana has a terrible start, and the league has to scramble because she’s selling jerseys and merch like crazy, and they had to switch venues. Then the WNBA got very precious, very tribal, very insular – ‘SHE’S NOT GONNA MAKE THE US BASKETBALL OLYMPIC TEAM!’ and you’re like ‘Are you CRAZY?’... You’re not going to put Caitlin Clark, your Taylor Swift, on the team? She sells out her All-Star jersey in 17 minutes.
The WNBA doesn’t quite have their feet under them, they’re doing a Ticketmaster, and they’re bailing water. Clark is exploding as a player, she leads the WNBA in assists, she’s third in three-pointers made, and Indiana has won 8 of 12. Yesterday in the fourth quarter she was the best player on the floor and scored 10 points in the quarter. You’re not gonna hear anybody pick on women’s basketball as a unit. There’s a lot of sycophants in the media; they feel like the sport has been ignored so they’re part of the brigade to support it. That’s fine, but let’s be honest about it. The sport made a terrible decision on the Olympic team, the scheduling early was ridiculous, and now Indiana is on fire. Clark is like a 17-6-8 player and she’s getting better by the week. She says the right stuff at the podium and there’s nothing about her you don’t like.
You made a big mistake the first time not putting her on the Olympic team. Don’t double-down on dumb. Get her on the team. Give us a reason to watch the Olympics women’s team. You guys win gold every year, your competition is weak, give us a reason to watch. Quadruple your television ratings with her, promoting not only the other women on the team who could get endorsements, but promoting your sport. Women's basketball has felt overwhelmed here. You got your Conor McGregor, you got your Bryce Harper, you got your Messi in the MLS... You put them on TV. It’s funny, the salary cap in the MLS. They got Messi into the MLS and the guy makes more than some of the teams. They figured out a way to get him into the MLS. They weren’t precious and rigid.”
