Doug Gottlieb on Jalen Hurts' NFL Future: 'He's a Solid Backup'

Doug Gottlieb: “I get a call today from Jason Stewart [Doug Gottlieb Show producer] and he’s like ‘Man, are you sold on Jalen Hurts?’ NO! HE’S NOT GOOD! He’s fine -- he’s a good, solid backup. Some of the throws in the first half last night were just so bad. You’re playing against a JV team. Even the 16 Washington starters that are out with COVID, it’s not even counting that they were without Chase Young who is their best player. Philly won the game and played very well in the second half, but let’s look in totality. Hurts was awful last week against the Giants, there was nothing special about what he did throwing the football. He ran it great vs. New Orleans, Denver he was bad, Chargers he was bad, and he got hurt in Detroit. They’re starting to get to the point where they’re like ‘ehhhh, okay…’. They’ll be in the market for a quarterback. They might find a way to be in this thing in terms of the playoffs because the NFC East is so bad, but let me give you their wins on the year. The Falcons, Panthers, Lions, Broncos, Saints, Jets, and Washington Football Team. They’re not good and anyone who is good at all has beaten them. So yeah, I’m not sold on Jalen Hurts… Jalen Hurts has everything in terms of competitiveness, makeup, and athleticism, he’s just not a good thrower of the football, that’s it. He’s not a good enough thrower of the football to bring out all the other plus-attributes he has in terms of intangibles and some tangibles. There’s a reason Tua was better than him [at Alabama], and there’s a reason why at Oklahoma, Baker and Kyler were better than him.” (Full Audio Above)

Listen to Doug Gottlieb explain why he’s lukewarm on Jalen Hurts’ potential as a starting quarterback in the NFL, as Gottlieb emphatically pronounced that Hurts is ‘not good’ and is more suited as a long-term backup at the position.

Hurts has the Eagles in the thick of the NFC playoff hunt at 7-7 behind the league’s top rushing attack, but he’s thrown just 14 touchdown passes in 13 games, and is averaging only 210.1 passer yards per game, with a completion percentage (61.3%) that ranks 28th in the NFL. On the ground, Hurts has rushed for 733 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Check out the audio above as Gottlieb details why he’s not buying the hype with Hurts.
