Doug Gottlieb: Deshaun Watson is Not as Good as We Thought

Doug Gottlieb: “When the Texans were 0-4, I understood why they fired Bill O’Brien, but one of the points that had been made to me that I had seen, saw, and asked was ‘How much of it was Bill O’Brien, how much of it is the team not buying in, or is Deshaun Watson not as good as his reputation would you lead you to believe?' The dude is a warrior, he’s a competitor, and he’s a winner, but he’s not as good as his reputation would lead you to believe. We like Deshaun Watson. He’s not a bum, Houston doesn’t need a quarterback, he won a national championship, but he is not Russell, he is not Kyler, he is not Rodgers, he is not Mahomes, and he is not Brees in terms of accuracy. In the group of guys that move around he’s not at that level either, he’s a notch below. It feels like because we all like him, and because he’s tougher than a $2 steak, that everything was Bill O’Brien’s fault, everything is because they traded away DeAndre Hopkins, and everything was anybody BUT Deshaun Watson’s fault. Maybe Deshaun Watson is just not as good as his reputation. We all like Deshaun Watson so we’re all willing to give him a little bit of a pass when he’s not as good as we thought he should be.”

Listen to Doug Gottlieb explain why he thinks Deshaun Watson may have been overrated, as the league’s second highest paid quarterback is just 2-6 on the season, with the 14th best QBR in the league.

Check out the video above as Gottlieb details why he thinks the media has unjustly overhyped Watson’s standing as one of the best players in the league just because he has the reputation of a college hero, a ‘good guy’, and proven competitor who can play hurt.
