Doug Gottlieb Ranks His Top 10 NBA Point Guards of the Modern Era.
10. Kyrie Irving
“I would make the case that Kyrie Irving is as talented as the guy at number two guy on this list. Kyrie has won a championship and he hit the big shot to win a championship, Kyrie’s big issue is that the Celtics are better without him, Cleveland went to the Finals without him, and Brooklyn looked good without him. I think he’s a supreme talent, but can he get along with people and can he stay healthy? He’s not a very good defensive player, and that’s not what makes it bad. What makes it bad is he’s a bad defensive player that won’t listen to his coaches, and will guard the other team’s best player just to make a point. There’s a lot of other stuff, but man is he good. He could lead the league in assists and he could lead the league in scoring, he’s THAT talented.”
9. Gary Payton
“'The Glove' was an elite defensive player his entire career. He only took the Sonics to one NBA Finals, but Payton was a perennial All-Star, was an Olympian, could really score, could really lead, and could really play both ends of the floor. He was also college basketball player of the year with Oregon State.”
8. James Harden
“’WHOA GOTTLIEB, WHAT ABOUT RUSSELL WESTBROOK?!’ No, when Russell Westbrook and James Harden were in Oklahoma City, in the fourth quarter James Harden was the point guard. When Russell Westbrook is now in Houston James Harden is the point guard. James Harden has led the league in assists and he’s won an MVP. He hasn’t won the big games and doesn’t play much defense, UNTIL LAST NIGHT!"
