The USGS paid tribute to late golfer Grayson Murray ahead of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst this upcoming weekend.
Murray, a North Carolina native, was honored with a plaque inside the locker room, which was shared by the U.S. Open's X account.
"The USGA remembers Grayson and pays tribute to the playing accomplishments that merited his place in the 124th U.S. Open Championship," the plaque stated, along with the quote, "be kind to one another."
Murray, 30, was reportedly found in his Palm Beach Gardens townhouse with exhaust fumes from his Land Rover running in the ground-floor garage after a neighbor heard a carbon monoxide alarm go off. The golfer's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, had previously revealed that their son died by suicide in a statement shared on May 26.
“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” the statement, which was shared by the PGA Tour with suicide help information, reads. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world.
“We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.”
“We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”
“Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else. Thank you.”
Murray was open about his past struggles with sobriety and depression. The North Carolina native's death came one day after he withdrew from the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge during the second round on May 24, citing an illness.
Murray was a standout amateur golfer, winning three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships between 2006 and 2008, ranking as the top player in his age group at the time and making his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at the age of 16, becoming the second-youngest player to ever accomplish the feat. The 30-year-old opened the 2024 PGA season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii, his second career PGA Tour victory, sinking a 40-foot birdie putt to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley.
"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said on May 25 via PGATour.com. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.
