Larry Fitzgerald Makes Surprising Comments About His NFL Future

Free agent wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald hasn't announced his retirement, but he's not eager about returning to the field.

In a Friday interview with sportscaster Jim Gray, Fitzgerald was blunt when asked if he'll be a radio broadcaster or football player this season. He said:

"For now, I'll be a radio broadcaster. To be honest with you, I just don't have the urge to play right now. I don't know how I'll feel in September, October, November moving forward, but I just, today, I just don't have the urge.
"And I think I have to be respectful of that. Football is not one of those games you want to walk out there and play and not be fully engaged and ready to prepare and do the things necessary that you need to do."

Fitzgerald also admitted that he wasn't enthusiastic about returning to training camp, which he called "the toughest part of the year."

There's been speculation that Fitzgerald will sign with a team that isn't the Arizona Cardinals to win the Super Bowl. But he told Gray that he's after more than just a trophy.

“(The) desire to compete and to be part of something that is much bigger than you, it is the main reason, and obviously the pursuit of the Lombardi Trophy. You have to be in love with the process of pursuing the Lombardi Trophy, and that’s the part that’s most important," he said.

Fitzgerald's plans for the 2021 season are still up in the air, but Arizona coach Kliff Kingsbury has a space for him in case he decides to return for an 18th season, ESPN reported.
