Colin Cowherd Finally Warms Up to Long-Time Adversary Baker Mayfield

Colin Cowherd: “I know many of you view my opinion of Baker Mayfield as one-sided and too harsh, but I will say this... I think, actually, everybody is under-playing the Baker Mayfield story. If Baker Mayfield wins this division, he’s going to get an AFC and an NFC team to the playoffs. Russell Wilson couldn’t do that... This story is underplayed. Baker did it with Cleveland, mostly a laughingstock, and Tampa, which pre-Tom Brady had not won a playoff game in 17 years. This year is validating Baker Mayfield. That Cleveland o-line, the Cleveland run-game, Kevin Stefanski – he's now doing it with a defensive coach [Todd Bowles] who got run out in New York and has won less than half his games. I know his division isn’t great, but I didn’t hold that agianst Trevor Lawrence last year when he won his division, so why should I hold it against Baker Mayfield? Baker is doing this with a defensive coach in 2023 who has a sub-.500 record. Baker deserves more credit than he’s getting. This is a great story. If the Bucs make the playoffs and give Baker a big contract, I’m okay with it. I’m also getting a much more mature Baker Mayfield. He’s always had a chip on his shoulder, but like a lot of young people – it took being humbled for him to go ‘wow, I gotta look in the mirror a little bit, I kinda screwed that up.’ Baker is a smart guy. As a commentator he’d be a home run. He’d be a great analyst, he’s very quick, very bright. I’ve been told on a white board he’s brilliant, and now I’m getting more maturity. I’m not saying he’s Brady-mature but he’s more mature. Replacing Tom Brady is hard, go ask Belichick and the Patriots. If Baker is the guy who gets a four-year deal, I’m OK with it. This is the rare story that we’re underselling with the quarterback. This is a REAL thing – Browns and Tampa, gets both to the playoffs. That doesn’t happen a lot.” (Full Segment Above)

Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s The Herd credit Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield for the career-resurgence he’s had this season leading an underdog Tampa Bay Bucs team to within one win of a division championship.

Check out the segment above as Colin details why he would be perfectly okay with the Buccaneers signing Mayfield to a lucrative three or four year-contract despite at one time calling Mayfield ‘undraftable’, mocking his rocky times in Cleveland, and even saying Baker should 'retire' if he would have lost his job to Bucs backup QB Kyle Trask in training camp last summer.
