Tara Davis-Woodhall Lost National Title Over Positive Cannabis Test

U.S. long jumper Tara-Davis Woodhall has been stripped of her national indoor title over a positive cannabis test.

On Tuesday (April 25), the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said Davis-Woodhall tested positive for THC, per CNN. The positive results stemmed from a sample collected at the 2023 USA Track and Field indoor championships on February 17, which was the same day she won the national title for long jump.

Davis-Woodhall lost her title and was hit with a one-month suspension, which she began serving on March 21 and recently completed.

THC is derived from cannabis, marijuana, and hashish, all of which are prohibited substances under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules.

“WADA seeks input on each year’s updated version of the Prohibited List,” USADA’s press release states.“USADA has advocated and will continue to advocate to WADA, the rule maker, to treat marijuana in a fairer and more effective way to identify true in-competition use.”

Athletes who test positive for THC can receive a reduced suspension of under three months if it's determined that the substance wasn't used in relation to competition or sports performance. According to USADA, Davis-Woodhall’s suspension was reduced to one month for the aforementioned reasons and because she partook in a substance abuse treatment program for her cannabis use.
