Four Reasons Why Every NFL Team Needs to Start Running the Football More

Listen to Colin Cowherd list his four reasons why he thinks every team in the NFL should run the ball more.

1. Fewer Hits on the Quarterback

"The more you run, the fewer hits your quarterback takes. This is an obvious one. Thirty passes is 30 opportunities to bang around my quarterback."

2. All Quarterback Are Better Throwing on Play Action

"If you have an effective run game, everybody throws better on 2nd and 3. Third and 8 is a terrible down, and an effective run team puts a quarterback under center, linebackers play close to the line, and you have bigger gaps between linebacker and safety."

3. All Offensive Linemen Prefer Run Blocking

"General managers will tell you it’s ridiculous to ask offensive linemen to pass protect 40 times a game. Why? Because they’re the least athletic guys on the team, and the defensive linemen are almost always more athletic than the offensive linemen. Asking an offensive linemen at 315 pounds to block downhill is what they live for. It guarantees more offensive line success."

4. Control Time of Possession

"Efficient run games, if you have the lead they eat the clock. If you have a bad defense, they protect your defense, and they keep them off the field. They control the time of possession. An incomplete pass stops the clock. Run, run, run -- if you have a bad defense it shortens the game, and if you have a lead it shortens the game. I think the league passes too much.”
