Colin Cowherd: Ja Morant Needs to Change His Playing Style ASAP

Colin Cowherd: “I said when Ja Morant came out that he reminds me of Derrick Rose. He’s actually smaller and lighter than Derrick Rose but I think he’s a better shooter. I really think Ja Morant is better served to be more Steph Curry than Derrick Rose— stay outside and shoot, don’t go amongst the trees in the forest and get knocked to the floor. I do think he’s a special player, but use history as a guide. Steph Curry is still viable and a lot of times he won’t finish at the rim. Stay outside and shoot, Ja shoots like 40% from the three-point line. Derrick was not a natural shooter, John Wall is not a natural shooter, Westbrook is not a natural shooter— they score at the rim, and they’ve all had a lot of injuries. I like Ja a lot but I worry about little guys with no hand-check in the NBA who can get to the basket any time they want. Ja is smaller than Derrick Rose. Rose came into the league at like 190, Ja is 175. Ja can get around anybody, In the old hand-check league you couldn’t. Jordan would push guys, and you can’t anymore. All these young guys can get past anybody any time they want. The good news for Ja is he really is a good shooter and he’s got a nice, feathery touch, so I would recommend doing more Steph Curry and just pulling up. That forest in dangerous, STAY OUT, it’ll knock you to the floor a lot. D-Wade spent half his career on the floor but he could handle it— that’s not Ja’s body type, he’s 174 pounds. He’s got great self-awareness, let history be your guide, pull-up and stay out as often as you can, but it’s difficult for guys like Ja because with no hand-check he can literally get to the rim almost any time he wants.” (Full Segment Above)

Watch Colin Cowherd explain why he thinks Ja Morant needs to alter his playing style to extend his longevity in the NBA and avoid becoming another tragic case of John Wall or Derrick Rose— that is, a dominant contact-inducing penetrator who rapidly breaks down in the prime of their career.

Check out the segment above as Cowherd says why he thinks Morant should become more of a Steph Curry or Damian Lillard type scorer, and try to avoid making constant trips to unforgiving areas around the rim that he is used to attacking regularly.
