Chris Broussard: “Toronto, according to some, are going to be the ones to land the biggest draw in baseball, and you got issues with this??”
Rob Parker: “I really do, and Toronto is a great city, an international city, and I’m not doing it tongue-and-cheek. Toronto is a great international city. But I’m going to be honest... As great as Toronto is I DON’T WANT SHOHEI OHTANI TO PLAY FOR THE BLUE JAYS! I DON’T WANT SHOHEI OHTANI TO GO NORTH OF THE BORDER! IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF BASEBALL FOR SHOHEI OHTANI TO PLAY NORTH OF THE BORDER! IT’S THE ABSOLUTE WORST NIGHTMARE FOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL! He’ll be playing in the Eastern Time Zone, but IN ANOTHER COUNTRY WHERE YOU GET NO JUICE FROM THE TV RATINGS BECAUSE THEY DON’T COUNT! IT’S CANADA! I’M TELLING YOU, IT’S NOT A GOOD THING. THIS GUY IS A UNICORN AND WE NEED HIM TO BE IN A BIG MARKET ON THE EAST COAST WHERE EVERYBODY CAN WATCH THIS GUY DO HIS THING. SHOHEI, I KNOW YOU WANT TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, BUT MY MAN, CAN YOU DO SOMETHING FOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL?? CAN YOU DO IT AND NOT GO TO PLAY IN TORONTO?? IT WILL NOT WORK OUT FOR ANYBODY EXCEPT YOU! YOU DON’T WANNA BE THAT SELFISH, DO YOU?! IF YOU’RE GOING TO PLAY IN TORONTO, YOU MIGHT AS WELL PLAY IN BOSTON, YOU MIGHT AS WELL PLAY IN THE BRONX, YOU MIGHT AS WELL PLAY IN FLUSHING! Seriously, it will be better for you, for baseball, and for all involved. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the report -- they were premature -- that it was a ‘done deal’, and he was headed for Toronto. I was like ‘NOOOOO!’... I love Canada, but not when it comes to the biggest baseball star since maybe ever that we’ve seen. Please stay on American soil! I want the borders to be boarded up, but that’s so Shohei can’t get out, not come in!’ Block the borders up North! DON’T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN! The commissioner of baseball has ultimate power, I’ve seen him do it before. I want him to invoke the ‘Not in the Best Interests of Baseball’ and to bar any sort of movement to go to Toronto. I’m dead serious! I want Rob Manfred to get on the phone and say ‘Shohei, can you do me a solid??’ It’s been done before, you saw it in the NBA when David Stern did it to Chris Paul to the Lakers, when he stopped that trade.” (Full Segment Above)
Watch Rob Parker of Fox Sports Radio’s ‘The Odd Couple’ explain why he thinks a scenario of two-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani being sign by the Blue Jays would be ‘bad for baseball’ if muddled rumors of Ohtani’s interest in Toronto actually become a reality.
Parker says it would be a nightmare scenario for Major League Baseball if arguably the sport of baseball’s biggest draw left a major market in the United States for Canada, adding that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is secretly hoping that Ohtani changes his mind and stays stateside.
Check out the segment above as Rob even sings a special rendition of ‘NO, CANADA’, pleading for Ohtani to rejects Toronto.
