Colin Cowherd: “Anthony Edwards said in three years he’ll ‘be the best player in the NBA'... My guess is that he will end up being the Dominique Wilkins of my era. An All-Star, a lot of points, highlight reels, absolutely spectacular, but no titles, and could never get past better players, or better teams.
He’s not going to have the defensive impact or close to it as Wemby. He is not as good a two-way player as SGA, who is an MVP finalist and better defender. He doesn’t score like Luka, who is also a better creator for others. And he’s not as good as Jokic.
The Celtics could be the ‘team’ of the next ten years, or it could be OKC that is stacked, or it could be Denver... Nobody thinks right now that it’s Minnesota. I’m not saying he’s not great, but you can make the argument that by the All-Star Game next year, Wemby and Jokic will be the two best players... and Luke is three... and Giannis is four... and SGA is five. Most of them are really good at a multitude of things – all of them arguably better than Ant Edwards on defense, and a couple better in shot creation for others.
That’s not to say that Dominique Wilkins wasn’t great, but he’s not really in the conversation now. Dan Marino was great but he wasn’t as great as contemporaries in terms of wins, playoffs, and Super Bowls. I can like him, but the Celtics as well as Denver are going to be the two teams, so he’s not going to have the team success. He’s going to score a lot of points, and on many nights he’s going to be the most spectacular, and he’s very, very good player, but I don’t think he’ll ever be the best player in the league. He’ll win a scoring title or three.
Dominique Wilkins was often the most exciting and the most fun to watch. It’s almost like with Ant Edwards, Phil Mickelson entering golf. Mickelson’s prime was Tiger’s prime, it’s like ‘what are you going to do?’ There were a lot of guys in the NBA who were in LeBron’s prime or Michael’s prime, and once he got Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson – Michael had to leave the sport for the Rockets to win.”
Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s The Herd explain why he thinks Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards could become the new 'Dominique Wilkins' of the NBA as the next human highlight reel who dazzles fans his entire career with his electric play on the court, but a guy who never wins an NBA Championship.
Check out the segment above as Colin details why he thinks Edwards will be left in the shadows of Luka Doncic, Victor Wembanyama, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jayson Tatum this era and never be a part of memorable title teams.
