Chris Broussard: Aaron Rodgers' Vaccine Controversy Could Cost Him MVP

Chris Broussard: “When I vote for the MVP in the NBA I don’t look at narrative, but a lot of writers do, and the narrative of a 44-year-old who has defied Father Time, who is leading the league in yards and touchdowns, is much more of a compelling ‘narrative’ than the guy who lied to the media and told us he was ‘immunized’ when he meant vaccinated, and the guy who sat out a game because he wasn’t vaccinated, and cost his team a big loss to the Chiefs. If I was voting I wouldn’t bring that into play but a lot of people do.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Chris Broussard and Rob Parker debate the NFL MVP race in a contest that is now starting to really heat up after Tom Brady’s nightmare game versus the Saints last week, with Chris wondering if voters will shun Rodgers from consideration because of his run-in with NFL COVID-19 protocols last month.

Rodgers was burned in the media after testing positive for COVID-19 on November 3rd and later revealed to have never received the COVID vaccine despite telling reporters ‘Yeah, I’m immunized’ when asked directly.

Rodgers’ usage of the term ‘immunized’ was highly controversial, given it came in the form of homeopathic treatments from his doctor, and not a vaccine, with some sponsors even immediately dropping Rodgers.

He was forced to miss the ensuing Week 9 contest at Arrowhead, in a game where Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense could only muster 7 points in a 13-7 loss.

Many around the league thought Rodgers was purposely misleading reporters when it came to his vaccination status, with some outright calling Rodgers a liar. Rodgers said in one contemptuous interview with The Pat McAfee Show ‘I’m an athlete, not an activist’, and punched back at members of the media who were ripping him for not being vaccinated.

As an unvaccinated player, Rodgers would have been violating NFL protocols by appearing at press conferences maskless, and potentially putting others in danger who may have believed he was vaccinated all along.

Some even put forth the belief that Rodgers should have been suspended by the NFL in the same way the league punished Antonio Brown for using obtaining a fake vaccination earlier this month.

Despite Brady leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns, Rodgers’ 30/4 touchdown-to-interception ratio coupled with Green Bay’s league-best 11-3 record could be enough to win him the award again for the second straight year.

Going into Week 15, Rodgers and Brady are effectively tied in the Vegas MVP odds, with Brady still clinging to a tiny lead in most books.

Although Brady was embarrassed by New Orleans last week, Rodgers didn't fare too much better vs. the Saints defense in Week 1. Rodgers posted an ugly 14.0 QBR score with 133 yards on 15/28 passing, two interceptions, and no touchdowns, in a 38-3 drubbing that was played in Jacksonville after Hurricane Ida.

Check out the segment above as Chris thinks an NFL media still scorned over Rodgers’ perceived arrogant behavior regarding COVID could punish Rodgers by not voting for him, and going with the 44-year-old Brady who has a strong case anyway.
