Nick Wright: No. 9 Seed Lakers Can Still Reach the NBA Finals

Nick Wright: “I don’t think the Lakers are dead this year. You can say I’m crazy, I just go up and down the Western Conference, I’m like ‘okay, the no. 1 seed is Denver, I know a healthy AD and LeBron can beat them.’ I know they can. Who knows with Memphis. The Suns, veteran leader [Chris Paul], and best player [Kevin Durant] are incredibly injury-prone now. Post-Achilles Kevin Durant is injured all the time. If the Lakers can survive this time without LeBron, and I don’t know the severity of the foot injury, but if they survive it— LeBron having three weeks off before a playoff run in a wide open West, I’m not ready to write them off yet.”

Watch Nick Wright of FS1 join ‘The Volume’ with Colin Cowherd to explain why he’s not writing off the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference yet despite the team sitting ninth in the West with a record two games under.500.

Volume Sports host Jason Timpf echoed Wright’s sentiments, saying the Lakers might just be the league’s most dangerous team:

“This is a legitimately very dangerous basketball team in the Western Conference. LeBron and AD have both flashed that top 5 upside when they’re healthy within this season. They now have an extremely skilled backcourt. D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley complement LeBron and Anthony Davis really well. Austin Reaves has been excellent coming off the bench. Dennis Schroder is as good of a backup point guard as you’ll find in the league. Jared Vanderbilt has become an extremely versatile defensive weapon that can guard the other team’s best player regardless or archetype. He’s basically handled every type of matchup they’ve thrown him at. They check a lot of boxes now, and they have better top end talent when healthy than anybody in the league. Yes, there are guys that are better than LeBron. Yes, there are guys that are better than AD, but there’s nobody in the league that can put the two of them together.”

Even though the Lakers sit in the ninth spot as of Friday afternoon, they’re just one game back in the loss column to the no. 5 seed Clippers.
